Response from the Gambling Commission

  1. When asked for comment on my previous post, a spokesperson for the Gambling Commission said in an email: “We do not talk about individual cases.”
  2. The gambling regulator went on: “Online gambling operators, whether they are based here or abroad, are required to hold a Gambling Commission licence to transact with British-based consumers. Unlicensed remote operators may be liable for the offence of advertising unlawful gambling (under section 330 of the Gambling Act 2005) if the remote gambling activity isn’t blocked to consumers in Great Britain and that this is clear to consumers.”

Teddy Sheringham promotes unlicensed gambling operator – in national newspaper

  1. Teddy Sheringham, the former England footballer, is promoting an unlicensed (black-market) gambling operator – in a national newspaper.
  2. On 14 June 2024, Mr Sheringham was quoted in the Daily Mirror opining about who should play in England’s opening match in Euro 2024, against Serbia, which takes place on Sunday, 16 June 2024. A message appended to the article reads: “Teddy Sheringham was speaking to TG Casino” (screen shot in Figure 1).

  1. TG Casino is an unlicensed gambling operator: it isn’t licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.
  2. As an unlicensed gambling operator, TG Casino isn’t permitted to advertise to UK consumers.
  3. It’s bad enough “Lions legend Sheri” is promoting an unlicensed gambling operator. Worse, a national newspaper is providing a platform for him to do so.
